BACKGROUND
People in Need delivers assistance in Northern Syria addressing the needs of IDPs and hosting communities in several sectors such as food security, livelihoods, shelter, protection, education and WASH. PIN is well-established organization with several field offices, direct implementation and more than 400 employees. Main office sits in Erbil and provides support services to field teams inside Syria. PIN’s contribution to the Syria humanitarian response is amongst the largest, with an annual turnover of over $35 million across Syria and funding from humanitarian donors including ECHO, ENI, BHA, SDC and SCHF.
People in Need (PIN) started its nutrition activities in North West Syria (NWS) in 2023. Under the supervision of the Programs Director, the Nutrition Program Manager is expected to coordinate the MIYCN-E, CMAM, and Nutrition CVA activities and ensure that the relevant programming nutrition objectives are successfully achieved. The Nutrition Program Manager will be based in Gaziantep with frequent visits to North West Syria.
ROLE
In line with the NWS Nutrition Cluster guidelines and under the supervision of the nutrition Officer, the Nutrition assistants will be responsible for the timely implementation of Nutrition activities. He/she will be based in NWS, and will also work closely with other programme sectors to ensure that the activities are complementary as much as possible. The assistants will ensure the activities serve for improving the nutrition security of vulnerable households by increasing access to and consumption of diverse diets.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Nutrition Officer main responsibilities include:
• Ensure selected nutrition activities will promote the adoption of positive nutrition practices, in particular of PLWs and children under 5 years (focus on complementary feeding)
• Ensure the nutrition CVA intervention is closely monitored and supervised to achieve the best quality
• Support the implementation of the nutrition action plan, outlining activities, timeline, and resources needed;
• Ensure that Social and behavior change sessions focus on key maternal nutrition and complementary feeding (for infants 6-23 months) behaviours
• Support and train the nutrition assistants and the outreach workers to conduct nutrition CVA activities and facilitate MIYCN sessions.
• Ensure SBCC sessions include monthly group sessions (e.g. linked to participatory nutrition food voucher redemptions) and interpersonal communication (IPC) during household follow-up visits.
• Supervise and support the Nutrition assistants in NWS. This entails Oversight on implementation progress, task management, quality assurance, administrative procedures, reporting, and GZT/field discussions
• Work closely with the nutrition program senior officer to ensure accurate projection of spending and forecast, adjust plans in light of foreseen over/underspending, and ensure that expenditures are in line with the projects’ objectives.
• Work closely with other support departments to ensure timely, qualitative, and appropriate execution of the operational procedures, including but not limited to the procurement of goods and services and staff recruitment.
• In coordination with M&E team, monitor MIYCN activities at the community level, and strengthen the quality as needed;
• Support nutrition surveys and/or assessments as required;
• Document lessons learned; and
• Participate in identifying opportunities to increase quality of PIN´s Nutrition project
• Assist in any other tasks as required.
EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• A University Degree or equivalent in nutrition, public health, or other nutrition-related field,
• A minimum of 3 years professional experience in nutrition, public health and/or in relevant areas of maternal, infant and child nutrition in a humanitarian context,
• Experience of nutrition programming, including monitoring and evaluation,
• Proven ability of supervising, and training on MIYCN-E and CVA
• Demonstrable ability at report writing and strong communication skills
• Good English skills.
Desirable
• Experience of SBCC
• Good English language skills.
